Neil L. Shapiro
Neil L. Shapiro enjoys a national reputation for his expertise in the legal concerns of publishers, broadcasters and web site operators, as well as for his litigation experience in libel and invasion of privacy claims, copyright and trademark infringement actions and commercial disputes. He regularly counsels members of the print and electronic news media about access to and issues arising from public dissemination of information, and counsels web site operators about similar issues in the Internet context. He has tried cases in both California and United States District Courts, and has briefed and argued appeals at all levels of both the California and the federal judicial systems.
Neil's professional expertise includes:
- Pre-distribution review of newspapers, magazines, books, television news reports, documentaries and films
- Counseling Internet web site operators on issues of content, privacy, copyright, and linking
- Defense of publishers and broadcasters against claims of libel, invasion of privacy, and other torts arising from publications or broadcasts
- Analysis and litigation of claims of copyright and trademark infringement
- Commercial litigation in diverse subject matter areas, including contract, real property, and business torts
- Appellate practice in state and federal judicial systems
- Evaluation and mediation of disputes
- Counseling clients on First Amendment rights and limits in both commercial and non-commercial contexts
Neil received his law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law, where he was Order of the Coif, in 1971. He received his BA degree in Political Science from the University of California.
